Last night I rode a bike with a half a flat tire to catch the CMJ Souls of Mischief, SADAT X, AG show at Southpaw. It was a last minute decision and a good one. I was glad to get a chance to catch up with A-PLUS…. and Snafu.

I was also happy to hear the Souls announce their new album ‘Montezuma’s Revenge’, which is entirely produced by Prince Paul and will be coming out in December.

Shout outs to Gavin and Michelle atAUDIBLE TREATS for putting together a dope show last night.

THROWBACK THURSDAY- KING JUST NO FLOWS ON THE RODEO

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

I really bumped the shit out of King Just’s ‘Mystics of the God’ tape when I was like 15 or 16. From intro to outro. I loved the ‘Pizza man’ skit. I remember being on a family vacation at the Grand Canyon, sitting in the back of the rental, typical teenager style, headphones on blaring this tape, while my parents drove. Rude. That’s why I’m never having kids.

Anyway I tried to find a bio on King Just, but was unable to find anything. When I typed “King Just” into Wikipedia
all I got was this dizzying list of Wu affiliates, which he is not on, but it is definitely worth checking out.

‘Captured’

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Since 1979 Clayton Patterson has dedicated his life to documenting the final era of raw creativity and lawlessness in New York City’s Lower East Side, a neighborhood famed for art, music and revolutionary minds. Traversing the outside edge he’s recorded a dark and colorful society, from drag to hardcore, heroin, homelessness, political chaos and ultimately gentrification. His odyssey from voyeur to provocateur reveals that it can take losing everything you love to find your own significance.

Check out what he say’s about why he doesn’t like new Rock-N-Roll and how he hopes the same thing doesn’t happen to rap.

TONE TANK THROWBACK THURSDAY’S: MIND PLAYIN’ TRICKS 94 (SCARFACE VERSION) & MORE

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

The other night I got a bug to hear Mind Playing Tricks on Me. You know the kind of thing where you cannot continue with life until you hear that song play at least once, if not over and over for a good ten minutes? So I went looking for the song and something better happened… I found this Scarface version which I had never heard before.
He really is one of the most soulful rappers out there, and I need to go back and take a listen to everything he’s ever recorded.

Also, I used to really enjoy, before my brain realized just how evil the world is, the St. Ide’s rap commercials. I wanted to collect them all like ________ (sorry, it’s too early for similes). Here’s one that I found with the Geto Boys:
